Support The Online Citizen (TOC)
Why Your Support Matters
In Singapore, the space for independent journalism has become increasingly constrained. Legal and regulatory tools, alongside pressure on funding channels, have raised the cost of doing accountability reporting and reduced the room for critical voices.
Measures such as the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) have been used in ways that can chill public debate. At the same time, the POFMA Direction of Correction / restrictions linked to the DOL have materially disrupted our ability to sustain operations through normal commercial means, including advertising revenue.
TOC has continued publishing despite these headwinds. We have been operating from Taiwan since 2023, but the financial realities remain straightforward: maintaining a functioning newsroom, infrastructure, and legal resilience requires direct reader support—especially when traditional revenue streams are constrained.
